I rotoli di papiro egiziano utilizzati nel mondo greco furono infine sostituiti da libri di pergamena. Il motivo \u00e8 che il re d'Egitto viet\u00f2 l'esportazione del papiro per evitare che la Biblioteca di Pergamo superasse quella di Alessandria. In risposta a ci\u00f2, gli abitanti di Pergamo inventarono la pergamena come nuovo materiale di scrittura per sostituire l'uso del papiro, che era stato monopolizzato dalla citt\u00e0 rivale di Alessandria.
