Los rollos de papiro egipcio utilizados en el mundo griego acabaron siendo sustituidos por libros de pergamino. La raz\u00f3n es que el rey de Egipto prohibi\u00f3 la exportaci\u00f3n de papiro para evitar que la Biblioteca de P\u00e9rgamo desbancara a la de Alejandr\u00eda. En respuesta a esto, los habitantes de P\u00e9rgamo inventaron el pergamino como nuevo material de escritura para sustituir el uso del papiro, que hab\u00eda quedado monopolizado por la ciudad rival de Alejandr\u00eda. El templo, construido durante el Imperio Romano, es una de las mayores estructuras romanas que se conservan. Se cree que se utilizaba para rendir culto a los dioses egipcios, en concreto a Isis y\/o Serapis. El templo se construy\u00f3 sobre el r\u00edo Selinus. El r\u00edo se canalizaba en dos t\u00faneles que pasaban en diagonal a lo largo de unos 150 metros. Los bizantinos convirtieron el templo en una iglesia cristiana dedicada a San Juan.
